Favourite Jones-Lewis tune?
I’ve always liked Kids. I played Groove Merchant and Backbone a bit too often.
I want to program something other than a typical J-L shuffle.

Cherry Juice
Check out the great Frank Foster solo at 2:15.
Sidebar: Thad Jones was one of the best "conductors" I ever saw. People think that a big band leader counts off, and then relaxes. Thad would sit in front of the band, shaping the tune with his hands the whole time, outlining phrases, punching the air, indicating crescendos, egging the band on and generally having a ball.
Here's a great 1970 concert:
Bonus: Jimmy Knepper solo at 14:30

-Composed by Hank Jones, arranged by Thad Jones
For the record, Groove Merchant was composed by Jerome Richardson, just arranged by Thad.

I think Forever Lasting is a nice under-appreciated gem. It's on the Greetings And Salutations album, which was actually recorded by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group, not the Vanguard orchestra.

Tip Toe for the soli! i see the copyright is 1963 Diane Basie Music. Does anyone know if the Basie band played it.

Going to resurrect this thread - "Us." The stop-time soli sections in it are something else! Cliff Heather is a rock on bass trombone.

Oh wow--that Jimmy Knepper solo! He had the most amazing tone of any trombonist I've ever heard. I don't always care for the way he articulates, but I can just drink in that tone all day.

Don't get sassy.
Saw that band live in the late 60s. Awesome.

FWIW, I totally agree with you! Warts and all - hands down - a great sound. Totally appropriate for his horn and what a trombone of that size should sound like!
