I run into this ever so often. Band or orchestra tunes to the oboe or clarinet. They use there tuner. There tuner is not in tune and like Thursday night, we have out tuning slides over an inch out from normal.
Why are some tuners so far off?
I am taking my Petersen with me next week.

Re: A 440 but not quite
I don't think I've been in an orchestra at any level where the string players would let that fly. Too far away from the tuning they are used to (whether 440, 442, etc) and they have to adjust too much, much less the numbers of them that have perfect pitch.

Most tuners have to be calibrated properly.

This is why I hate it when I show up to a rehearsal for a group and everybody has their own tuner! Most don't know it has to be calibrated and the end result is cacophony!
Let's go back to the days of using our ears instead of the wonders of confusing tech!

Wait for the tubist to play, then match that (adjusting only as a courtesy). Playing in tune happens in the practice room, only bring your ears to rehearsal to match the few brass players around you that matter.
