King 605F leadpipe
Well hello again all. I had a question regarding the King 605F leadpipe. I’m looking to start a project with one of these particular horns and was wondering if the leadpipe to the 605F is similar or the same to a 2B leadpipe. I’m looking to put a Brassark pipe on it and was wondering about the compatibility. I appreciate the help.

Re: King 605F leadpipe
Well, for starters the 2B has a different slide than the 605F. The 606 pipe is the same as the 2B+ pipe. The 605F is… .491 bore iirc and a 2B pipe is .481. I can’t answer how similar it is though

Re: King 605F leadpipe
King 2B (dual bore) - upper slide bore is 0.481"
King 605 (single bore) - slide bore is 0.491"
King 605F (single bore) - also 0.491"?
Sounds like a mismatch.

I would think it's not the same as a 2B leadpipe since the bore is .010" bigger. I can make a .491 leadpipe if you want one. Did you have the original leadpipe pulled?

Re: King 605F leadpipe
That's correct, the 605 and 605F had the same .491" single bore. The old single-bore Liberty from 1934-1935 was straight .481", and of course the 2B is .481-.491".
King moved to .500" bore with the 606.

Finetales beat me to it while I was writing but submitting since there’s a little of my opinion in here:
Correct. I thought there may be .484” uppers but I can’t find any mention of it so I don’t know where I got that misconception from. The 2BL (Jiggs model) is a .491” so it’s possible it has the same leadpipe given than the 606 and 2B+ are the same part but it came long after the 605, so it’s equally as likely to be different.
If I were swapping I’d probably go with Brad’s pipe. The one piece stuff works really well. I have been thinking of ordering one too for a 2B/605F project. Need to see how something else plays out to see if I need a 481 or 491. Depends on how I end up configuring the slide

I actually have not done anything with the slide yet, it should still be all original, I think I definitely am interested in having one made.brassmedic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2024 12:55 pm I would think it's not the same as a 2B leadpipe since the bore is .010" bigger. Hmm…looks like I’m on the same page as I’m looking to a 605F, 2B project as well!Matt K wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2024 1:26 pm [quote=Posaunus post_id=247187 time=1720203130 user_id=158]

Re: King 605F leadpipe
What I'm doing is making my 2B slide compatible with my 607F bell. The slides are comparable, at least dimensionally. I have an O'Malley 6iii clone bell on the ay and was thinking about putting it on the 605F bell valve, but I think I want to do the 2B slide... if the 607F slide receiver will work. I have doubts sine the valve is also .491, or at least the tubing is according to my caliper. If it's too small for the receiver, I'll probalby use the 605F slide and swap the pipe and crook out.

That’s interesting indeed. I’m looking to swap to a 2B bell on mine. I’ve given thought to a new crook…just wasn’t sure about compatibility and how it will effect the horn…

Not sure what I'd do with it, but it's too bad that King never made a 606F.Matt K wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2024 2:50 pm What I'm doing is making my 2B slide compatible with my 607F bell. I had a VERY nice King 606 - professional level, in my mind. Having an F-attachment could be fun!

Re: King 605F leadpipe
Yeah that would be an interesting horn, although I bet it would play pretty similar to a 3BF. Would be awesome to have another model to pilfer good quality rotors from

Re: King 605F leadpipe
Creating a removable leadpipe system for a King 605 is a little more complicated than just pulling out the current leadpipe and plugging in other leadpipes (if you can find them) that are sized to the .491 bore. The King leadpipes are in two parts…..mouthpiece receiver and leadpipe, which starts at the tightest point. The outside of the mouthpiece receiver has the same diameter size as the outside of the inner slide and actually becomes the first 1+ inch of the inner slide. In other words, if you set up your 605 as a removable leadpipe system, you will need to purchase a longer .491 bore inner slide (bottom slide of the King 2B) for your upper slide. In order to use your current 605 leadpipe, you will need to have the outside of the receiver turned down on a lathe so it will fit in the new inner slide.
I have done a few of these on King, Holton and Allora trombones. Although the instruments have turned out well, the downside is that you end up with a slightly shorter inner slide extra part that will rarely find a new home on another instrument.

Re: King 605F leadpipe
Hmm, definitely wouldn’t have thought of that given my lack of experience with modifying a fixed leadpipe instrument to a removable setup…I know I do like the responsiveness of the 2B and am looking for something similar.
Now as to the ability to have a removable leadpipe that could easily be switched out with a different leadpipe…I’m not to sure I would even need a system like that. If the press fit would work, maybe in the future I would look at trying a different pipe…but right now I’d just be looking for an upgraded pipe in yellow brass to start.
Thanks again for all the knowledge, it is very much appreciated!
