I thought I'd just shout out that I just finished a run of Memphis The Musical with the Birmingham Village Players (Michigan) on trombone.
The book is a blast to play, but the show does require a VERY strong trumpeter. Fortunately we had that in Paul Roache, local theater/symphonic trumpet mainstay.
And the show really required the cast to sing their collective souls out, and this cast was phenomenal.

I did that show a few years ago, unfortunately with a trumpet player for whom a lot of that stuff was beyond his usable range. So, that was...yeah. I agree with your assessments though, it was one of the better shows I've had the chance to be a part of.
