Carl Geyer Trombone

Post by cainerson »

I was recently gifted an old trombone by my neighbor with the engraving "Carl Geyer, Maker, Chicago" on the bell. I know Geyer used to make horns in Chicago but I have looked everywhere online and have found nothing about him ever making a trombone. Is this valuable? Or a fake? For reference I am a music teacher who's primary is flute so I don't know a whole lot about older brass instruments. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Probably authentic, not fake. One of very few trombones Chicago-based Geyer made in the late 1920s/early 1930s.

I also found a couple of Facebook posts about Geyer trombones, but I can't access them. Apparently they do exist but are very rare.

Probably not valuable (except perhaps to a devoted collector). It's a rather small trombone by today's standards. May not play like a modern trombone. But if you don't care about all that ...

Maybe there's some out there who collects Geyer French horns who would really want it. AFAIK, there's no horn equivalent to TromboneChat, but there are some Facebook groups. You might also contact some of the shops that handle a lot of vintage horns, like Houghton Horns or Ken Pope. They're not likely to want to buy it, but maybe they can point you to someone who would.

Oh don't get me wrong I intend on getting it fixed up and playing it was just wondering if it was a super nice horn or not as I haven't gotten my hands on it yet. Thanks for the info!
