Sshmute for bass trombone

I had to return my Sshmute to the LMS because it would not fit the bell flare of my Yam 620. Has anyone had similar problems?

I like the way the Bremner sounds/plays on my tenor. A bit disappointed.

I have the old style straight cone Sshhmute for bass trombone.

I have to spray the "corks" with water to get it to stay in.

Other than the spontaneously-falling-out problem, it sort-of fits.

Yamaha’s advertising talks about a smaller bell although the bell diameter is 9.5”. Narrower throat perhaps.

I had that one. Sold it and bought the never style.

However, here's a tip to get your version to stay in the bell: take one of those wide rubber band which are used to bundle together a couple heads of broccoli and put it around the midway point of the cork/foam area. After adding this, you shouldn't need water and definitely won't need to push & twist as hard when inserting it.

Anyway, that solved the issue for me. I think I learned about that on this forum actually...but I don't remember who posted it.

Resurrecting this thread. I've sshhmutes for tenor and bass. The tenor one is brilliant in large and small bore, but as previous posters have noted the bass one isn't. My gut feel is the bass trombone one is actually a tenor horn mute, whereas the tenor trombone one is designed for tenor trombone. It looks like lazy product design to me. A shame because the tenor one is great!

I have both the tenor and bass versions as I'm a fan of how Bremner mutes play. The bass one is the newer version and I've tried everything to get it to stay in my Bach 50 but it's a disaster. I've resorted to wrapping my tenor mute with bike handlebar tape to bulk it up and use it in my bass which stays put until fortissimo. If I find another practice mute that plays as well as a Bremner and fits then I'll definitely switch!!

The cork on my tenor one is slightly concave, which matches a trombone bell. The bass one is straight at best, but possibly convex, which I'm sure is great for tenor horn...

Maybe shaping the cork would help.

I bought the French horn one to use on my contrabass trombone (fits very well) and I find that it also works well in my Basstrombone , if not sticking out a bit more than normal. (Shires bell)

The new curved one works very fine for both my Holton 181 and Conn 112H bass bone. The trick is to sand the Cork to follow the curvature of the bell, and then grease it slightly. Which makes tight insertion a breeze, and no, it does not slide out.

I used my bass Shhhhmute just yesterday in my Kanstul 1662i and it worked fine. It might have been loose at the end of my warm up, but it didn't fall out. Nice mutes, do what they should. I wish it weren't as bulky, but otherwise a really great mute.
