Ethel Smyth recalls Brahms

Post by robcat2075 »

British composer Ethel Smyth, mentioned in another thread, studied at the conservatory in Leipzig for a year but found it lacking and left to study with the Austrian composer Heinrich von Herzogenberg. His social circle intersected with Clara Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and many others.

Here, reading from her memoir in 1927, she speaks of meeting Brahms.

It's recalled? Will I get sick if I listen to it?

Ethel Smyth is a fascinating person and composer. Her Opera "Der Wald" was performed by the Metropolitan Opera in 1903, and it would be another 113 years before another opera penned by a woman composer would be performed by that opera. Der Wald in particular is wonderfully composed and has a fascinating story line, IMO. Worth checking out.

There's a lot of 19th Century composers who, although admittedly not as wonderful as Beethoven or Brahms or Bruckner, have at least a couple of good pieces in them and yet we never hear them in concerts.
