Balancing a Conn 100H

I have a Conn 100h which I really like except for it being front-heavy. Has anyone added a weight of some type to the tuning slide brace on one of these? If so, did it work and where can I get one? I don't care that much about looks.

I have some spare Conn counterweights that would work. They are the modern era type.

The 100H has the "tootsie roll" weights on the braces - regular counterweights won't fit.

You could go to a hardware store and get parts and make your own. I have known some guys who have done that

Mac, I'd bet a Rath R1 "R" counterweight could be made to fit. And it even customizes to your name

Thanks all, Bravo Bruce! Local shop Osmun may be able to do the lead injection, but I'll look at the Rath bit first.

I had a 100h for a long time. Never noticed it front heavy. But perceptions and expectation will vary. The lead is a great idea. But do one of them first. Then see if the balance works for you. If its still front heavy then do the other. Do the one furthest from the bell first to get the biggest difference.

So are the Tootsie rolls on the braces hollow? Otherwise I can't see how you could inject lead into them.

I don't think they are. Also, the braces are pretty thin, so even if they were hollow, you wouldn't get much lead into them. I think something in the style of the Rath weight is the best bet. Other option is you could get some lead solder (plumbing section at the hardware) and wrap it around the braces. Won't look good, but you can at least see if it helps.

Here is a Red Green solution. Ducktape a roll of quarters to the rear brace.

LOL! This particular instrument had a great silver plated finish, so not worth it to me to mar it just for a little more balance. Thanks for all your ideas though.

On the older Olds Ambassadors the counterweights were mechanically mounted to a bolt that was soldered to the inside curve of the tuning slide crook. Buy a junk Ambassador, harvest the parts, and have someone retro-fit it to your 100H.
