An interesting video autobiography and some great playing by SNL trombonist Steve Turre. This is a fairly recent video that was only published by Sacramento State in June this year.

I love the inscriptions on his trombone and his motivational advice.

I had a pang of guilt when he told all the brass players to hold up their instruments.

Hey! I'm picking up steam on the YouTube front and I was wondering if any of you guys would care to join me. Just performing my own arrangements of popular songs for usually trombone quartet. Seems like you guys might actually love trombone as much as I do.

Maybe it was me, but the link you posted seemed rather non-specific. However, I cut to this vid and thoroughly enjoyed it:

I gave it a listen and found it inspiring. I don't know Jack about arranging/composing. However, seems to me that if I could follow the pattern you set, I could have a chance. Lay down a combo rhythm/root note track. Add to it and build to a higher solo track. Am I getting this?

Now, here is my $64 question: how do I make nice with harmony - without it either being too tight or too broad? I'm thinking barbershop quartet harmony fits tenor trombone. Do I even have the kernel of an idea here?

This video has been posted previously, maybe more than once, but it is still one of my favourites. I just love the arrangement and, whilst I normally do not see the point of all the doodle tonguing and fast playing in which modern trombone players indulge themselves, the solos here have beautiful lines that make you think about where each phrase is heading. Just great from the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra's SuperTrombone group!

Yeah, Graham, that video of "Paper Moon" is fantastic and features two of my friends, Jim Pugh and Conrad Herwig. These two guys are not only two of the greatest jazz players in the world, they are also two of the most down-to-earth, friendly, and honest people I know. I am privileged to have them as my friends. Lou, I really liked that performance and especially your solo! I think it might have something to do with the fact that I grew up on European free jazz and it somehow makes sense to me. I did think the sax solo was a bit 'overboard', despite the audience appreciation. The rhythm section was extremely good.

I once rehearsed with Dave Holland at Kingsbury in the UK when we were very, very young men - late 1950s maybe. Just a mate on alto sax, who was trying to get me interested in playing modern jazz*, Dave and myself on trombone. Even in those days, long before he was discovered, Dave was a ace bass player and my mate and I were way out of our league. Well, I was anyway.

* BTW, I never made the transition.

This is a really long thread, it could take a week to read it!

I wonder: is this thread purely of 'one at a time players' only?

What has really sparked my imagination is the collective effect of trombones whether in a group (likes bones appart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-Sk5chcIQk ) or multitracks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQfnhUSey2E&feature=c4-overview&list=UUHxaa1gaNAmTRJRhf_PkByA). I started the thread way back when YouTube was a fairly new phenomenon. The original intention was to post links that showcased what this whole section is supposed to be about: "The great trombone players from all styles of music: Classical, Jazz, Latin, Ska; you name it!" I think that intention has been lost by some in the ravages of time but the forum should be used the way that members see fit. And who is to say what qualifies as 'great', although I have sometimes wondered about clips that were posted.

Anyway, multitracks are certainly one way of presenting a trombonist/s. The only additional thought I have is that, if the video is more about the music than the trombone player, then maybe it belongs in another section.

My own posts here tend to underline the original theme I had in mind. But each to his own.....

If I understand what Graham means, is that this thread is for all of us to post wonderful performances of trombonists that we have found on any medium. Performances of individuals posted for other comment or just their own self satisfaction of having their music out there might do better on an all around social media like "Facebook" or a different thread on this forum.

I guess I had metally decided the question to be: 'what has this post become' rather than 'how did this post start out'. Having seen some of my own posts wander off from the original intent I do see your point and the issue of flexibility.

'My bad', I should have looked at the original post, silly mistake, sorry.

I would still find a thread on youtube trombone multitracks/small groups interesting, my interest would be centred more towards the performance than the individuals or specific groups. If there already is such a thread then I've missed it, would such a thread have value to the forum?

I understand why you like this Graham, who can not? What I wonder about J.J.Johnson is why it always sounds like he play perfect, never miss any notes, still what he do is improvisation? For me he is like Mozart, only J.J. Johnson can compose on the fly with his trombone. Amazing...amazing. So relaxed, so easy, so musical....Its not for me to understand so I don't even try. I just enjoy. I think Mozart would be the same if he was in the same place and time.

A very interesting choice of tunes for an Artie Shaw opener. Shame about the background noise.

I arranged that Méditation de Thaïs piece many years back for our concert band but I wasn't game to take the trombones up where you were.

Actually, come to think of it, we discussed it when we first started the Composition, Arranging and Theory section on this forum and Stan Bann gave me a hand with the arrangement. I thought his approach was much better than mine. How time flies!

Nice Doug! But I was surprised that your band covers such a wide repertoire.

Nice to listen even it is a camera in the audience. I like the Thais very much. Its nice in that register on your trombone. But its 2 octaves above my world of trombone playing

There is no doubt that the music of Lu Watters Yerba Buena band was very exciting and a lot of fun. It was of course the start of the West Coast revival in America and also influenced some musicians in the British/European Traditional Jazz Revival (The so-called Trad Boom). Certainly they were a huge influence in Australia and their music is still a big crowd favourite at every jazz festival I attend.

Great playing from Raul de Souza. He has such a wonderful tone on all his bones. I was interested in the valve trombone in the last clip. Never seen a four-valve trombone before. And the electronic harmony was a very stunning effect. I would like to know more about that.

I see Doug was interested also.

"Tribute To Benny Moré" is the name of the piece, and it is a barn burner!!! Check out the rhythm section and the singer!!! And then...check me out too at about 4:38. A long, long solo...too long, but Tito did that sometimes when the groove was on and it was on that night for sure. People often ask why I became so enamored of NYC latin playing and why I dedicated so much of my life to it. This is why. "Double Euphoria Heaven!!!" as the great comedian/prophet Lord Buckley so aptly described such events. Bet on it. The power!!!
