Curtis is such a master.  I find his recent stuff especially interesting...
This excerpt isn't particularly "polished," and it's not all that pyrotechnical-
but somehow he conveys a lot of depth with minimal effort..
And when you check him out live, he just radiates in a way. this clip has a bit of that.

Who is he?

Just about to ask the same question. i fooled around seeing if i could play anything like that but i cant get higher then this       then again, i spent about 2 minutes doing it...

I don't think he really can get any high range with that, but he makes money doing what he does, and does a damn fine job doing it in my opinion.

My guess is that the trombonist with Louis was Big Chief Russell Moore.

As o the Curtis Fuller--- sorry, I don't think it was his best, or even near.

Interesting Marty. I had no idea who it was but I like the style. When was the Chief in the Allstars?

It must have been in the interim before Trummy Young joined Louis. If I recall correctly, Trummy was the last trombonist to play with Louis' band.

Is Utube great or what? I just spent over an hour there, couldn't stop checking out one after another. I have enjoyed the two trombone team with Pete Fountain's band on recordings I have. It's nice to see them and watch them. I once had their names but can't remember. Their styles are quite compaible so there are no "trainwrecks."

Thanks mate, I am going to try and find some more tracks with him playing.

But Trummy was not the last. After him came Tyree Glenn, a trombonist I have always liked a lot and with a very distinctive vibrato. I have been in touch with his son Tyree Glenn Jr. over the last couple of years and he sent me some private recordings. Jr is a tenor sax player based in Europe and playing mainly R&B. His other son is in a symphony orchestra.

Great clip, loved the bowed bass solo!

I remember an older guy that used to play around the town where I grew up. His slide arm had gotten stiff, maybe arthritic, with age, and he had to keep moving his embouchure farther and farther to the right so that he could reach the lower positions. He ended up looking fairly similar to the guy in the video. It worked but it wasn't pretty!

Lacy swings! Great tone, great ideas, great rhythm. He makes the trombone sound like a trombone! No pyrotechnics, just straight bone playing.

Benny Green plays with a lot of soul. Great blues sound.

Roswell, Roots, Robin-  there's a section for you.
That's an understated solo for Roots, but it's all there- huge sound, in-your face, soulful & real..

Hi ! For the mouthpiece placement, that is how i play, with the m'pce on the right of the mouth. But i only play like that in the middle register : for the low and high register, i center the mouthpiece.

It really is amazing how much jazz trombone is becoming available on YouTube. Their Search function also seems to operate very well. Try it with your favourites.

My favourite has always been the British top trombonist Roy Williams. I have followed his career with interest right from the beginning, particularly the long period when he was with the Alex Welsh Band, and my band used to play their intervals. I guess there has to be one in every band.  In this case, it is the trombonist George Brunies; here playing with Bobby Hackett and Pee Wee.

Aside from his dancing and the ability to operate the slide with his foot, George Brunies is a great pioneer of trombone style. He was, originally from New Orleans and played with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings (his solo on Tin Roof Blues is one of the most copied solos of all time), Wild Bill Davison’s Commodores, Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier’s Ragtime Band etc. etc.

I watched him several times in Chicago in the 50's and he didn't carry on quite like that!

The "Don't mean a thing" clip with Roy Williams was super!  What a "trombonist's trombone player! Out of sight.

The "Old Folks" I thought was reminiscent of the trombonist Bill Harris.

Can't help but be interested in the way he holds the instrument quite still and level, and
simply puts all movement in the slide.

I just listened to Roy Willimas on It Don't Mean a Thing. Wow!! What a superb trombonist. I had never heard him play before. He has a very nice fluid, relaxed style of play. His improvisation was very nice and tracked the melody.

Not a bad singing voice either!

Wonderful player!  I had not heard this man play before, and I'm happy to have discovered him through this forum and the Internet in general.

I am so pleased that you guys like Roy Williams.

Roy is a pom like myself and I have been listening to him for 'Oh so long'.

A very keen ear you have Marty. "Jazz (The Rough Guide)" says that George Masso was inspired to take up trombone in his teens by Lou McGarity's record of "Yours". And of course both played for Benny Goodman.

It was a nice solo....kindy notey at times though.

Gees, that was a really untidy band and badly recorded. And the solo didn't do anything for me either. I hate to think this is what young players are trying to emulate. Sorry, but that was my honest impression.

I got the impression that the band was sight-reading or trying to jell. It didn't seem to me that this was a band that had played together much.

I can respect his technical facility and his accomplishments and ability to make money off of what he does, but I just can't deal with his style of improvisation.  I think he gets very notey, and goes out for way to long.  The thing is, if he knows what's out, he must know how to play in the changes.  His solos just make me think, "OK, so this guys has chops.  Great."

Overall I'd say it was a typical handful of choruses in
surroundings that urged Herwig to try and put some interesting things ion.
If a bone player doesn't" do that in a situation like that, he is gong to get "runover".
In the last few bars tha band did , typically, overpower him.It has been mentioned hereabouts before that is is too bad that when up alongside
saxes and trumpets, trombonists have to show off their ability to jump around the horn, often to doubtful ends.

C'mon guys don't judge Conrad on one measley blues solo.
Conrad CAN PLAY ANYTHING and is a master of jazz!!!
He has developed a style which IS uniquely his own and has taken trombone playing to a level that most won't even get near harmonically.
Having said that i guess you don't have to like it.
Especially if what floats your boat doesn't get beyond the 40's/50's
