I came across this 1983 clip of Albert Mangelsdorff, and it reminded me of what a truly innovative player he was.

Enjoy!

Heard him many times in Germany, live. He deserves a lot of credit but, after a while, most of his solos sounded the same.

I was in the late 70's and early 80's fortunate to hear many of his concerts, both solo and with the jazz and Roch ensemble in Frankfurt, where they did pay many times in the jazz at the historic museum. Actually, it was these performers which made me feel that trombone is really cool. And I wanted to play bad ass jazz like these guys. I enjoyed especially the big band stuff, more than the solo sessions. Great performer, Albert and friends.

I heard the Jazz&Rock Ensemble live many times. Outside of Europe, an undeservedly undervalued band. An ensemble of soloists, very strong.
