I just saw Mr. Dease´s new album and wondered which trombone he is playing now. Does not look like a Yamaha YSL 630 I saw him playing last year. This one looks like a screw bell..
Regards

Based on the bracing and the counterweight (rather, one of the two counterweights) it looks still to be a Yamaha. Not sure which model though. Yamaha has been experimenting with screw bells.

Pretty sure it’s his 891z. I think I remember seeing something about it on Facebook too.

It is a 891Z. The ring that Yamaha used for the cut was originally meant for my 891Z but by the time they had finished the redesign of it I had switched to a 897Z with a .500 bore slide.

Cool! Is the.500 bore production spec or is it custom for you?

It’s a production horn but I believe you have to order it from a Yamaha dealer. I don’t believe you can try them anywhere. It’s a slide that they make in Japan that goes with the standard 897Z 7.5 in bell. If it’s a size you like it’s a great option and I prefer it to the standard 897Z slide.

anyone knows what counterweight that Mr Dease was using on his Yamaha trombone? I have the same problem. the original weight on 897z was to light

He has the standard Yamaha Z counterweight, sometimes nicknamed Batman, as well as an additional custom brass weight to the side of it that was fabricated by Scott Sweeney at SweeneyBrass. The horn with screw bell is a bit more front heavy and Yamaha did not change the counterweight to compensate so an additional weight helps balance.

When he was in Chicago with Lincoln Center his 891Z was also set up with Shires modular hardware. He left a bell stem with us that we will set up to be compatible with his current horn, and we will be making some additional bell flares for him and setting them up with Yamaha rings.
We also sent him home with our "Chicago" pipe which is a seamed yellow brass NY pipe with adjusted mouthpiece insertion.
