King 3B doesn't take large or small shank mouthpieces

Hi everyone, I just purchased a King 3B concert off ebay in pretty good condition, and my Bach 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece was too small for the receiver, so I bought a Bach 5G with a large shank. Unfortunately, that one doesn't seem to fit right either -- I can barely fit the mouthpiece into the receiver.

Upon further research, I've found what I believe to be the same trombone here:https://www.hnwhite.com/store/product/1 ... -sn-360985

This lists the mouthpiece as a C.M. Purviance LA 4Star 1, which seems to be much more expensive than other alternatives. I'm sure it's a great mouthpiece, but I'd like to find something more in my budget.

Has anybody else had a problem like this? Is this just an incompatibility between King and Bach? I appreciate any help or recommendations I can get

The 3B should take a small shank mouthpiece. It used to come with a King M31, then a 12C, then a 7C. All standard small shank mouthpieces.

It sounds like someone has removed the leadpipe from yours. Have a tech check it out.

If you pull out original two piece leadpipe out then it would be too large for small shank mouthpieces and small(barely fits) for large shank mouthpiece. I also vote for leadpipe check. It may be leadpipe-less setting or modified leadpipe that accomodates medium shank mouthpieces.

Correct, it sounds like there's no leadpipe in it.

Or the pipe is really worn down. The new King pipes are very good. You could put a new lead pipe in it, if the old one will come out.

The slide tube with no leadpipe is .508, which exactly agrees with a large shank "barely fit the mouthpiece into the receiver."
There isn't a receiver right now. Get a leadpipe.

Get thee (and the horn) to a repair tech.

The body of the leadpipe might be in there. But the receiver part of the leadpipe is missing. I would have a new, stock 3B pipe installed. It's a good leadpipe and an easy fix for a good tech.

FWIW, my 3B ended up having a one piece pipe in it -- not all 3Bs are the two piece type.

Please educate me. I thought all leadpipes were one piece.

Many Kings have two-piece leadpipes, with a separate receiver and venturi. King 3Bs had single piece leadpipes up until the '60s?

Two piece on the left, one piece on the right.

They had the One Piece thru the 60's at least, I think.
