As many of you know, 2024 marked the centennial of jazz trombone maestro J.J. Johnson. After seeing many others celebrating J.J.’s legacy this year, I decided to hop on the bandwagon and performed my own tribute last month to one of my first inspirations in both jazz and trombone playing. Here’s one tune from that gig, “This Could Be The Start of Something Big”, from the album “The Great Kai and J.J.”. That track was one of my first introductions to the Jay and Kai saga, and I even arranged and played it for a recital in high school, so it was a dream to play it again with this fantastic band. The melody is very catchy and the arrangement lays so well, going through 4 different keys, a testament to J.J.’s incredible arranging skills. Playing the music for this gig was surreal and a dream come true; I hope you all enjoy!
