Trombone Quartet Music

Post by jvangulik »

I know this is kind of blowing my own horn (ha ha), but if you have a trombone quartet or ensemble and you are looking for music, I have arranged over 250 trombone quartets over the past 5 years (since start of covid). All have been run through with my Capital City Trombone Quartet for sanity, sound, and playability.

I don't arrange for insanely talented groups with incredible ranges. Just "good" groups. Nothing above a Bb in any part. I like to "share the load" by moving the melody around within the pieces between all 4 parts to keep it interesting.

You can check them out yourself at https://jvgmusiconline.org. Every quartet comes with the parts in 3 clef options:
Parts 1-3 - bass, tenor, treble clef
Part 4 - bass, Bb treble, Eb treble
Optional Percussion (if called for)

I have created printable double sided book collections as well with indexes, separating out the Christmas music
101 Christmas Trombone Quartets ($ 50.00 CAD)
150 Trombone Quartets ($ 50.00 CAD)

If you purchase one of the 2 books above, you will also instantly have access to download the individual quartets of that type (Christmas or non-Christmas). Note that this includes all FUTURE quartets that I will arrange.

Most are also available on SheetMusic Plus and Sheet Music Direct where you can pay twice as much for the same piece ;) Try it out by logging in and dropping me an email via the Contact link to get a free quartet of your choice.

Tell me if you think that is a good deal and if you like the arrangements

Someone from my quartet bought a bunch of quartets from vanGulik, and everyone in the group recognized several of the charts we read. My Favorite Things is a slightly dumbed down version of a Pentatonix labeled arrangement found on Musescore. None of the changes rose to the level of qualifying as an original arrangement, it's a clear copy. The Three Equali is the same Three Equali that we all know minus the high notes. Several others were not even veiled lifts from charts we all know of arrangements like Achieved Is The Glorious Work, Autumn Leaves, Can't Help Falling In Love With You, Girl From Ipanema, etc.

Some stuff is public domain, but you still can't copy someone else's arrangement of PD material, put your name on it and sell it as your own.

Within Musescore this stuff happens all the time. It's part of what Musescore is designed to do. I do it. I'll take a sax quartet and rejigger it for trombones. But there are 4 things I don't do: 1) I don't put my name on it 2) I don't put the scores on the web outside of Musescore 3) I don't claim copyright 4) I don't try to make money off of it. vanGulik has even lifted some stuff that I have done, such as it is.

The money he's asking for these charts probably wouldn't cover the licensing from the publisher, so you get the feeling that step has been dispensed with. Beatles licensing is notoriously difficult to get. You can get better versions of all of this stuff for free from Musescore (after the membership fee).

More charts for tbone quartet is a good thing, but this is the wrong way to do it.

Tixador, aug 2022: https://musescore.com/user/15641311/scores/8538191 Trombone quartet. I used this as a basis for a version in mar 2023 that we use in my quartet, but we changed the ending and changed the clef for 1st bone since the guy playing this doesn't read tenor. And we changed the key to bring the top note down from Db to Bb. Reusing and customizing charts in Musescore is the way things work, but people generally don't try to sell their copies.

mbjenkins, Jun 2024:https://musescore.com/user/52215302/scores/18381823 Saxophone quartet -

VanGulik, nov 2024. Same intro, same counterlines, structure is the same, key change at the same place,
Changes: Key change brings high notes lower and low notes higher. Time is changed from 6/8 to 3/4. Clef change for 1st bone. Moved melody between voices. Removed some duples. All changes were toward making it easier.

We played the versions back to back, and they were "strongly reminiscent" (wink).
