Big Band (charts) with 5 trombones

Just want to use the hive mind in here to see what's out there and what I am missing. Of course Stan Kenton comes to mind. But besides that I'm a little lost at the moment...

Interesting. Didn't know that. Every chart that I played and most of what I checked that is available for purchase had just four parts.

Here, his horn setup is actually 5-5-6.

There are some Don Ellis charts that use a 5-5-5 horn setting.

Some of Bob Curnow's arrangements are also 5-5-5, if I remember correctly.

Since I'm currently not near my note archive where I actually have several of them, I can't immediately remember which.

Also: I have played some Gil Evans and some Herbolzheimer charts with 5-5-5 (or 5-5-4, I don't recall exactly which) setting.

If I remember my archive correctly, some of these Don Ellis charts are written 4 trombones and tuba, while some are strictly 5 trombones.

[EDIT] I always name the setting from front to back of a Big Band, so it should be read sx, tb, tp, when I specify the sections. [/EDIT]

I'm not familiar with this band beyond having played the arrangement of Time After Time that has 5 trombone parts.

I forgot: There are some original charts from Dizzy's band, especially from the 60's, with 5-5-5 (or 5-5-4 with a trumpet soloist part) setting. I played those in a Dizzy project looong ago (late 90's or early 00's) and I'm not sure where those can be found, but I remember them being the original charts and great, but somewhat taxing, to play.

Not sure if they distribute their library, but the UNT Lab Bands use 5 trombones (3 tenors/2 basses) and have plenty of material written specifically for them.

David Baker wrote many big band charts with 4 trombones plus tuba, if that counts. You can hear some of them on Basically Baker Vols. 1 and 2. by the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra.

Peter Herbolzheimer - La Fiesta
Bob Curnow the Pat Metheney arrangements are for 5 bones and there is often an extra arrangement for 4.
I prefer the 5 bone charts by It‘s just talk etc

Kenton and Don Ellis did a few of them.

Levy tunes w/ 5 trombones on “Kenton ‘76” inspired me to drop the clarinet like a hot potato and switch to trombone ; ))
