Music stand light for playing over the top of a stand.

Post by DRTrombone »

Hi,

When playing with a music stand, there’s two ways to avoid your trombone slide hitting the music stand:

1. Angle the slide under the music stand (traditional orchestral/brass band approach)

2. Angle the slide above the music stand (traditional swing/big band approach).

I play in jazz bands, so often play above the stand.

Only problem with above the stand is if you’re playing somewhere with poor lighting, you need a music stand light, and I find that if you’re not careful they stick up too high and interfere with your slide.

Does anyone know of either a low profile light, or maybe one designed to clip on the side rather than top of your stand (or does anyone have a different approach to music lighting when playing over the top of the stand?)

All the best,
Dave

What I used to do with "desks" was to have two lights, one clipped onto either side of the desk lighting across the music. The lamps are out of the way of the slide and the music gets illuminated.

I use the Aria Forte rechargeable stand light. It's pricey, but it has a low profile, can't be seen by the audience, you can put it on the top or bottom of the stand, and it lights up the whole page extremely well. It has LEDs all across the entire light, a 64-hour rechargeable battery, and you can also use it plugged in.

THIS. Probably the simplest way to go about it, and probably cheapest. I have seen some fancy gooseneck lights that might work, but they are kinda pricey.

It's also possible that you could work out some day to have a light at the bottom maybe?
